University of Stuttgart

The University of Stuttgart was founded in 1829, and is composed of 10 faculty departments. In 2013, more than 25000 students were attending courses at the University. Besides the prominent mathematics and physics departments, a major focus is laid on engineering subjects such as mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering (EE). In 2005, the EE department merged with the Computer Science department, making it one of the biggest departments of the university, with more than 25 institutes with synergies ranging from energy transmission, communications engineering to algorithms design and artificial intelligence. The associated supercomputing center Stuttgart is, in yearly turns with similar institutions, the most powerful in Germany and Europe, respectively.

The Institute of Telecommunications (Nachrichtenübertragung) of the University of Stuttgart employs about 12 full-time research staff and 6 technical support staff. Research ranges from optical to wireless communications, with a focus on physical layer research, with signal processing, detection and channel coding for reliable communications. It offers 10 full-semester lectures courses, and 3 lab exercises per year in the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science program of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and participates in two international course programs in English language, securing a continuous influx of highly motivated and skilled talents. For the specific tasks of machine learning, the Institute has an up-and-running design-flow based on open-source machine learning libraries, such as TensorFlow, that help to implement and train neural network models on fast concurrent GPU architectures. The Institute has many years of experience in building hardware prototypes for demonstrating over-the-air performance of future wireless systems, and is now focusing – through FunKI – on testing the viability of AI-based methods in wireless communications.
